The story behind Human Recipe

For three decades, I practiced medicine as an ophthalmologist, co-founder of OKIO Oogartsen, where I remain involved in medical education and practice development - a field that taught me precision, patience, and how the body’s systems work together. Looking into the human eye, I learned that it’s more than a window to vision; it’s a window into the brain, the vessels, and the body’s inner balance.

Over time, I began to see patterns: the early signs of inflammation, metabolic imbalance, and stress before they became disease.

The retina is brain tissue. The eyes reveal whole-body patterns. This shaped how I practice today:

understanding systems

understanding connections

understanding root causes—not just symptoms.

I realized that the most powerful health decisions don’t happen in hospitals. They happen in the quiet, daily moments — in how we eat, move, sleep, and recover from stress.

That realization changed everything.

Medicine, Evolved

When my oldest son was born with a mental disability, I experienced medicine from another side — the parental, practical, deeply human side. I understood what it feels like to seek answers the system doesn’t provide, and how much clarity matters when life feels uncertain.

I didn’t leave medicine.
I expanded it.

I wanted to use my clinical training differently:
not just to correct vision, but to help people see the bigger picture of health.

So I enrolled in the Nutrition Science course at Stanford Center for Health Education, a program rooted in evidence and human biology rather than trends or fads.

That experience deepened what decades of medicine had already taught me: true health depends on understanding how your body works — and applying that knowledge wisely.

Why I created Human Recipe

After thirty years in medicine, I saw a growing problem: people aren’t confused — they’re overwhelmed. Every headline contradicts the last.

Coffee heals; coffee harms. Fasting helps; fasting hurts.

Wellness became a marketplace of noise instead of a source of understanding.

Human Recipe was born to bridge that gap.
It’s where I translate medical research into clear, actionable guidance — focused on brain health, metabolic wellness, and longevity.

I don’t diagnose or treat disease; I educate, translate, and empower. My goal is to help you become an informed partner in your own health — confident, capable, and equipped to make decisions that last.

What I stand for

Medicine gave me structure.
Life gave me empathy.
Science gave me tools.
Human Recipe brings them together.

Everything I share passes through three simple filters:

  1. Is it backed by evidence?
    If research isn’t solid — I don’t share it.

  2. Can I explain the mechanism?
If science doesn’t yet know the “why,” I’ll tell you that too.

  3. Is it actionable?
If it doesn’t help you live better today, it belongs in a journal, not in your daily life.

I believe understanding is the most powerful form of prevention. When you grasp how your body functions, you can shape habits that sustain it — without fear, guilt, or guesswork.

My philosophy

I don’t promise miracles.
I promise clarity.

There’s no one-size-fits-all path to wellness. There are principles — evidence-based, timeless, adaptable — that guide you toward long-term vitality.
I’ll show you how to interpret new studies, how to read your own body’s signals, and how to work with your doctor as a true collaborator, not a passive patient.

Health isn’t about perfection. It’s about precision with compassion — the ability to make small, smart choices that respect both science and the rhythm of your real life.

Who I write and teach for

Human Recipe is for the woman (or man) who values clarity over hype, who reads the science—not just the headlines, who wants to understand her body, not just follow rules.

You might be in your forties, fifties, or sixties. You're health-conscious and intellectually curious. You read labels, you listen to the experts — but you’re tired of contradictions. You don’t need fixing. You need understanding.

If you’re curious, discerning, and ready to engage with science in a way that feels human — you’re in the right place.

For your life

Science that fits. Guidance that lasts.

You're an entrepreneur.
Your schedule is unpredictable. Your energy demands are high.
You can't afford to be "optimizing" in ways that take 4 hours a day.
You need strategies that work in the margins—at your desk, during travel, in the gaps between meetings.

Human Recipe gives you that.

Not "idealized" health advice.
Practical science that works when you're moving fast.

You're a mother managing multiple demands.
Work. Family. Health. Community.
You're juggling—and you're tired of wellness advice that assumes you have unlimited time or a personal chef.

Human Recipe respects your actual life.
We translate research into 20-minute meals, travel-friendly sleep strategies, movement that fits into real schedules.

Not perfection. Precision with compassion.

You value your time.
You don't want fluff. You don't want tasks that don't deliver.
You want to invest wisely—and see results.

Every strategy we share passes through this filter:
Is this evidence-backed? Can you actually do it? Will it matter?

If it doesn't meet all three? We don't share it.

The barriers you face

You're not confused. You're overwhelmed. Three walls stand between you and clarity:

🔊 Commercial noise

The wellness industry profits from confusion. Every trend means new products to sell.

⏰ The medical void.

Your doctor doesn't have time to explain the "why." You get prescriptions, not understanding.

🔒 The scientific wall.

Research is locked behind paywalls, buried in jargon, twisted by commercial interests.

I created Human Recipe to break through all three.

Welcome to Human Recipe

Your body isn’t broken.
Health isn’t a mystery.
You don’t need quick fixes — you need clarity.

My work is here to help you bridge the space between medical research and daily life — to translate evidence into confidence, and information into lasting well-being.

Because when you truly understand how your body works, you make better choices, you feel more in control, and you live with greater vitality.

Welcome to Human Recipe.
Welcome to clarity.
